"Wet" tests

Commercial airplane MC-21 tests on drenched runway

The Russian plane MC-21-300 is starting one of the most advanced stages of approval, where tests are carried out on flooded runways.

The purpose of these tests is to certify that engines, wings, aerodynamic signal probes - Pitot, AOA, TAT, etc., antennas and structure in general, will not be damaged or affected by the impact with water.

the tests are made by forcing the plane to pass through a kind of containment pool containing an agreed thickness of water depth.

the tests will be done on two batteries, the second one in a few more days or a few weeks.

The plane will be instrumented to measure the consequences of the "wetting machine" including the operation of engines at different power regimes, which cannot be affected or extinguished in any of the tests.

Everything will be closely monitored not only by engineers at Irkut, the ship's manufacturer, but also, of course, by Russian authorities responsible for aeronautical certification.

It seems that soon the World will have another elegant twin-engine narrow body embellishing the skies of the planet. We hope that by then Covid 19 has left us alone.
