A group of airlines in Spain foresees investments of 42 million Euros in the creation of a solar energy technology. The consortium formed by the low-cost company Volotea, the regional Air Nostrum and the startup Dante presented the project to the Spanish Ministry of Transport and plans to support the government in meeting its carbon reduction targets.
The consortium wants to convert all short and medium-range 9 to 19-seat aircraft involved in the project into electric ones by installing and adapting the systems to receive energy from solar panels.
This alternative is faster than creating an airplane from scratch, so the public-private partnership will invest around 280 million reais (in direct conversion) for the flight of the first converted aircraft to take place in 2024 and its certification to take place two years later. "This alternative is a much faster procedure, avoiding the long and expensive development of an airplane from scratch".
