The Philippines' multi-role fighter program is part of the project to expand the country's defense capabilities. The project will last for ten years, with the first stage starting in 2017 with the acquisition of six A-29B Super Tucano and 12 FA-50 Golden Eagle fighters.
Filipino F-5 fighters suffered from the old design and lack of parts. In 2005, these fighters were retired, so that the country's air force was without its supersonic flight capability.

The next stage of the program aims to remedy this problem with the modernization of the fighter frontline, which has been out of step since the retirement of the F-5.
The purchase of modern fighters is an old wish on the part of the Philippines, which has been going on since the 1990s. With the financial crisis that hit the country, it was not possible to buy the F-16C / D and the F / A-18 Hornet.
The country evaluated other competitors, such as the F / A-18 Super Hornet, the MiG-35, the Sukhoi Su-35, the F-16V and the Gripen E. The finalists were the F-16V and the Gripen, which are now going compete in the second phase and should be delivered at the end of the decade. Gripen E is being developed in partnership between Sweden and Brazil. If chosen by the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the country would be the third to have the fighter.
