Airbus is working to increase the fuel capacity of its A220 family aircraft. This extra fuel will expand the aircraft's autonomy, making it more competitive in the market. The increase in the autonomy of the model allows it to carry out routes that it could not before, in order to compete with others that already operate these routes of greater density, such as the Boeing 737-700.

According to the company, as engineers analyzed the aircraft numbers, it was found that there was additional margin available in the structure.

With the project underway, the maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) will be increased by 1 ton, from 69,900 kg to 70,900 kg. Thus, more fuel can be loaded, so that the range can be increased by about 200 nautical miles, from 3,350 to 3550 nautical miles (5,713 km).

The company also intends to offer a retrofit option to current Airbus A220-300 operators. Thus, companies that wish can increase the capacity of their planes, benefiting point-to-point routes. Even in consolidated markets, such as the USA.
