The coronavirus pandemic has strongly affected most economic sectors in Brazil and the world. In particular, the aviation sector was strongly affected, especially in Brazil. In an interview with the Estadão newspaper, the CEO of Latam did not skimp on criticism when talking about the government's response to the pandemic.

The interview was focused on the effects of the pandemic on the aviation sector. The points criticized by the CEO range from the lack of masks by members of the government, to a possible lockdown and even lack of communication and transparency on the part of the government.

“But the feeling is that there is a lack of management. Everyone is dealing with the crisis. Some countries are doing better; others do not. Brazil is in the group that clearly suffers most from the crisis. Like a company, a government deals with reality and perception. And today, the country is suffering for both. We suffer because of the reality, because the numbers (of cases and deaths) are very bad, but we also suffer from the perception that there is a politicization of the health issue and a misalignment between municipalities, states and the federation ”, said Jerome.

On the other hand, Jerome praises some measures, such as the transfer of patio space in Air Bases so that companies can store their planes free of charge, as well as the postponement of the collection of airport taxes and reimbursement of the affected passengers.

The CEO still expects that the volume of passengers seen before the crisis in 2019 will repeat itself in 2023, but revenues should take longer to recover. One reason would be the fact that Brazil is not well regarded abroad. “This should cause billing to take a long time to return. Whether it will be in 2024, 2025 or 2026, it is difficult to specify ”, concludes Jerome.

According to the CEO, on another occasion, the country took a long time to buy vaccines. Now, it is difficult to make up for lost time.
