An ET-AYL-registered Ethiopian Boeing 737 jet was involved in a serious incident. The plane landed on a runway from which it was not scheduled to receive it. The airport was under construction, but fortunately, the runway was ready to receive the plane.
The incident occurred on Sunday, April 4. The incident is considered serious, since landing at the wrong airport can even result in a collision with another plane. The incident ended well.
The plane landed at Copperbelt International Airport, which is still under construction, instead of Ndola International Airport. The two airports are located in Zambia, Africa.
Copperbelt International Airport, built by China, was scheduled to start operations in May 2020, but the works have not yet been completed due to the covid-19 pandemic. The airport runway has large inscriptions with the letter “X” on the headlands to indicate that the runway is not yet in use, but the pilots also did not pay attention to this detail.
Flight ET3891 left Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, bound for Ndola. After the incident, the plane left, about two hours later, to another destination, however, the tracking platforms do not have good coverage in the region and it was not possible to see the flight to the correct airport.
