“MiG is synonymous with Soviet fighters during the cold war. Sukhoi is synonymous with high-powered combat aircraft.
Rumors that there would be a merger between these companies circulated in the Russian press. The "Battle Aviation Division" is the new holding company that was announced by the Russian government. The division is part of the state owned United Aircraft Corporation (UAC).
“Sukhoi was commercially more effective than MiG. But surprisingly, it was Sukhoi's director who ended up getting fired. This is the result of the internal rivalry of the Russian elite, ”says Dmítri Litôvkin, the editor-in-chief of the military magazine Nezavíssimoie Voénnoe Obozrénie (in a free translation,“ Independent Military Observatory ”).

Sukhoi signed large export contracts for Su-34 bombers and Su-35 multifunction fighters and completed the development of the fifth generation Su-57 Sukhoi fighter aircraft, eventually becoming Russia's most profitable aircraft factory. All this between 2011 and 2017, when Ozar was the president of the company. These actions made Sukhoi's revenue in 2018 more than $ 1.5 billion, with a profit of $ 550 million compared to revenue of $ 1.2 billion and MiG's profit of 500 million .
The two companies fought commercial competition for many years and eventually resulted in the dismissal of Sukhoi's director, Ígor Ozar. In this way, MiG's director, Liá Tarássenko, took over as director of the new holding company.
“Modern Russia simply doesn't need as many fighter planes as it did in Soviet times. Thus, one of the main reasons for the merger is the need to reduce the country's spending on military aviation and make existing projects more commercially attractive to foreign customers, ”says Litôvkin, the editor-in-chief of the military magazine Nezavíssimoie Voénnoe Obozrénie.

“The new company will continue to work on existing projects, including the 'Hunter' drone, Su-57 and MiG-35 fighters, the PAK DA strategic bomber, and will develop a new interceptor to replace the MiG-31, says the editor- head of the Russian military magazine “Arsenal Otétchestva”, Víktor Murakhôvski. “The main objective is to increase profits and offer foreign customers more attractive contracts. The new company will intensify its work in Southeast Asia and in the aviation markets of Latin America ”, completes the editor.
The results of the holding company should be seen in July 2021, when the company is due to present the first Russian electric plane, during the MAKS-2021 military exhibition.
The United Aircraft Corporation group has owned MiG, Sukhoi, Aviastar, Beriev, Irkut, Myasishchev, Tupolev and Voronezh since 2006. Still, the merger is expected to bring about changes. “The consolidation of the main research and production capacities of the military aeronautical industry will allow to implement the existing programs and to develop promising projects in a more effective way”, affirms the UAC spokesman.
