Developed on the basis of the Sukhoi Su-27 air superiority fighter, the Shenyang J-11 is a 4th generation multifunctional fighter. The jet with armaments like a 30mm GSh-30-1 cannon, air-to-air missile guided by PL-12 radar, short-range missiles PL-9 and the infrared air-to-air missile PL-8, which replaced the Russian R-73, R-77 and R-27.

The fighter is a key part of the Chinese military fleet and is considered one of the best in the 4th generation. Chinese corporation Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, a subsidiary of state-owned Aviation Industry Corp. of China has invested in technologies to modernize jets to the standards of generation 4 airplanes.

Currently, more than 200 fighters serve the armed forces, with about 70 in the Navy and 140 in the Air Force, however, the exact number is unknown.

China continues to invest in these jets, making them increasingly efficient. Now, composite materials are used in the fuselage, in order to reduce the total weight of the aircraft, making it more durable and improving its flight capacity. Flight systems have also been implemented, such as a new and more powerful radar. These changes combined with the stealth, armament and avionics characteristics make the aircraft very powerful.

According to Military Watch magazine, the fighter continues to be improved so that, in the future, it will be equivalent to 5th and even 6th generation aircraft.
