Airbus issued a press release on April 13, stating that it made an inaugural flight of its transport plane, the gigantic Beluga, using SAF (sustainable aviation fuel. The idea is to advance decarbonization to reduce the impact of its operations.
“This first flight of a Beluga freighter from Broughton, partially fueled with SAF, marks an important moment in Airbus' ambition to decarbonize its industrial operations ... Combined with our current research into the potential use of 100% SAF on commercial flights, and reducing fossil fuels in our own operations, this underlines Airbus' commitment to lessen the impact of our production footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future for the aviation sector in general. ”Said Tony Derrien , Responsible for the company's Sustainable Aviation Fuel Projects.

This Airbus facility uses the Beluga aircraft fleet to transport aircraft wings to Toulouse, Hamburg and Bremen and became the second Airbus site to use SAF, being the first Hamburg to introduce fuel for cargo transport in late 2019 .
Sustainable aviation fuels are certified by regulatory agencies so that their use is up to 50% on commercial flights, reducing the impact caused by the use of traditional fossil fuels. The Beluga fleet operating from Broughton will use 35% SAF, resulting in a decrease of more than 400 tonnes in CO2 emissions over the next three months.
The press release also points out that the SAF used by Airbus is made of reusable and sustainable raw material and that this implementation is an important step in the decarbonization of Airbus.
