The chairman of the board of the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO, warns that the aviation sector should only return to normal after sharp drops in passenger numbers due to restrictions caused by Covid 19. ICAO chairman Salvatore Sciacchitano also spoke about the difficulties to be overcome as the region recovers.

The speech was made at the Hermes Transporte Aéreo event “Resilience and efficiency through leadership and cooperation” in the post Covid era. Last year, the number of passengers fell by 60%. This year, the fall forecast is in the range of 41 to 50%, stressed Sciacchitano, in addition to affirming that the Aviation Recovery Task Force supports the creation of ways to maintain safety for travel, the promotion of global vaccination and multilateral cargo traffic services.

The board chairman said these measures are in favor of standardized testing certificates for Covid 19. In addition, crew members should also be vaccinated. Priority should be given to the recovery and security of the sector. National civil aviation and transportation officials must advocate more vigorously for public health in air transport.

The task force outlines measures for more efficient public-private cooperation between governments and the aviation industry.

The long-term impacts of the crisis are also a concern for authorities in the area.

For the chairman of the board, Covid 19 is a health and economic crisis for governments. Sciacchitano spoke about cooperation and information on recovery strategies and the lessons learned by countries during the pandemic. Latin American countries were also praised for their cooperation with regional air cargo agreements to increase the transport of vaccines, thus helping with recovery.
