Qatar Airways currently has ten Airbus A380s in its fleet and has confirmed that it is suffering losses, as five of them are not operating and the expectation is that the same will happen with the others, in case the crisis caused by the pandemic persists much longer.

According to the company's CEO, Akbar Al Baker, “there is no future for the A380. It was the wrong plane at the wrong time. It is something that passengers love, many liked to travel on the A380, it is very quiet and very spacious, but at the end of the day, for the operator, it is really painful to keep it in the sky ”. According to him, in the current scenario, the costs for the maintenance of this aircraft are not viable, since they are three times the cost of an A350 or a B777.

At an event in January, Al Baker had already announced that half of Qatar Airways' A380 fleet would be retired. In addition, he has also stated that this aircraft is one of the worst in terms of carbon emissions. According to him, “Qatar Airways' goal is to continue growing and become carbon neutral with this growth. This plane just doesn't help us in that regard ”.

Qatar Airways' fleet now comprises more than half of the A350 and B787 aircraft. From Airbus, the company has 19 A350-1000 and thirty-four A350-900 aircraft, in addition to Boeing models: thirty B787-8 and seven B787-9. "Therefore, we will continue to invest and, at the same time, we will do everything in our power to maintain the environment," said Al Baker.
