Airbus released today (April 29) its results for the first three months of 2021 (Q1), showing a net profit of 362 million euros.

The health crisis caused by the coronavirus and the consequent restrictions to try to curb the spread of the virus have severely affected the aviation sector, however, with the advance of immunizations and the loosening of some restrictions, the company has shown a good recovery.

The good results in the first quarter reflect the performance of commercial aircraft delivery, cost and cash containment, progress with the restructuring plan, positive contributions from the helicopter and defense and space divisions, said Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury. The challenges of the crisis continue, and the CEO commented a little on that.

“The first quarter shows that the crisis is not over for our sector and that the market remains uncertain. We are investing in innovation and in transforming our company to fulfill our long-term ambitions across the portfolio ”.

Consolidated revenues were very close to those of the same period in 2020 (10.46 billion euros in Q1 2021 and 10.63 billion euros in 1Q 2020, representing a decrease of 2%). In total, 125 aircraft were delivered, compared to 122 in the same period last year.

Gross orders for commercial aircraft totaled 39 in Q1 2021, compared to 356 in Q1 2020) before cancellations. However, after cancellations, net orders for commercial aircraft were -61 compared to 290 for Q1 2020. The order backlog comprised 6,998 aircraft in Q1 2021. Thus, the revenue generated by commercial aircraft was 4% lower.

Airbus Defense and Space had 13% more in net orders, keeping revenue stable compared to last year, while the helicopter division registered 40 net orders (compared to 54 units in the first three months of 2020), reflecting the lower demand for civilian helicopters.
