Latam says it will be carbon neutral by 2050

Latam announced in its sustainability strategy last Wednesday, May 5, that it intends to neutralize carbon emissions by 2050 and zero waste in landfills by 2027. The company also hopes to be able to offset 50% of emissions from domestic flights in 2030.
To achieve this goal, the company intends to adopt a greater use of biofuels combined with new sustainable technologies for aviation and will abandon the use of disposable plastics by 2023, exchanging all materials used on board for recyclable or compostable ones, in addition to expanding the program of on-board recycling for all domestic flights and put in place a single recycling program in all countries. In addition, Latam also says that it intends to act in the protection of important South American ecosystems, such as the Amazon, the Atlantic Forest and the Chaco.
In an interview, the CEO of Latam, Roberto Alvo, stated that “today it is not enough to do what we have always done. As a group, we have a responsibility to go further in the search for collective solutions. We want to be an actor that promotes social, environmental and economic development in the region. (...) We are facing a critical moment in human history, with a serious climate crisis and a pandemic that changed our society ”.
The current scenario has caused a hardship for the airline industry, which has led Latam to end 2020 with a 58.4% drop in income and a net loss of US $ 4.5 billion. The company filed for bankruptcy in the United States in May last year to financially reorganize and manage its fleet.
