Japan Airlines (JAL) currently has the Boeing 777 as the flagship of its fleet, but intends to undergo a transformation in the coming years that will shift the focus to the Airbus A350. One of the advantages of this change is a better use of fuel, since the efficiency of the A350 in this respect can be better than that of the model 777.
The fleet renewal is part of the Japan Airlines Medium Term Management Plan, which will replace the 777 family aircraft, with the 777-300ER being the main one for international travel and the 777-200 for domestic flights, for the Airbus A350 XWB family. One of the reasons for this change is the reduction in operating costs, caused by an optimized efficiency of the next generation of Airbus widebody. In addition, the company believes that the A350's cabin will be a better attraction for customers, since in the XWB each seat offers, among other things, an enlarged personal screen for entertainment.
The number of 777 in the JAL fleet in 2019 was 39, and it is expected that by 2023 that number will drop to just 13, a two-thirds reduction compared to 2019. The number of A350s, which was five aircraft in 2029, will rise to 18 by 2023.
The A350-900 is expected to take the leading role of the 777-200 in domestic travel and the A350-1000 to replace the 777-300ER in the leading role of international travel.
Even with all these changes, JAL's fleet will still be smaller than it was before the pandemic. The fleet, which had a total of 241 aircraft in 2019, will have 229 in 2023. In addition, the proportion of the large fleet will also be reduced from 18% in 2019 to 14% in 2023.
British Airways may also be interested in adopting the A350 as its flagship in the future, according to rumors that emerged after a television ad, featuring the A350 with the title “You Make Us Fly” (you make us fly) .
