On the morning of last Tuesday, May 11, a freighter Antonov (AN-124, registered UR-82007) skidded and passed the end of the runway while landing at Guarulhos airport, in São Paulo. The airport was temporarily closed until the aircraft was removed.

During the pandemic, Antonov Airlines, in addition to its regular shipments, also operated the transportation of health equipment. The cargo the incident aircraft carried corresponded to 99 tons of personal protective equipment.

The accident occurred at 04:49 in the morning, when the aircraft, which came from Paramaribo, in Suriname, managed to land, but ended up passing the end of the runway. Nobody got hurt.

The airport's activities were resumed when the aircraft was removed, at 7:00 am, by a rescue vehicle that managed to return the Antonov to the runway, which was possible because the ground was firm.

The crashed AN-124 is one of seven planes of this model currently in use by Antonov. The aircraft is 34 years old and is one of those that carried cargo transportation during the pandemic, having carried out, in April alone, 24 flights.

The past few months have been complicated for the AN-124. On another occasion, the aircraft suffered an engine failure that led to an emergency landing that caused damage to the landing gear and the nose sunk in the snow. Volga Dnepr, which operated the plane, decided to suspend its entire AN-124 fleet.

The accident in Guarulhos is unrelated to this previous failure, and the causes are still unknown, but Cenipa (Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aircraft Accidents) is already investigating.

The airline, in close cooperation with the Brazilian Aeronautical Accident Prevention and Investigation Center (CENIPA), is conducting an investigation into the incident.
Preliminary results show that the incident was caused by changes in weather conditions, which made it possible to fly safely, but in the second half of the run along the runway, the plane went into heavy fog, which affected the taxi's timely taxiing. plane from the runway.
The aircraft has already been authorized to fly after all relevant inspections and safety checks have been carried out.
