Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said the plans for civil aviation are big. He said the country is about to start mass production of the MC-21, a narrowbody that has a capacity of 163 to 211 passengers. This aircraft will be manufactured by Irkut. Soon thereafter it will continue with the production of the Ilyushin Il-114-300.

“We plan to start mass production of competitive types of transport, medium-haul MC-21, regional Il-114-300 and a light model.”

The MC-21 would have the potential to participate in markets that are now dominated by Boeing and Airbus. The Il-114 competes directly with the ATR-72, a turboprop created in an Airbus partnership with Leonardo.

Irkut promises that the plane will have an operating cost up to 15% lower than that of direct competitors. The company already has 185 orders for the aircraft, with more than 100 purchase options. Most of these orders are from Russian airlines.
