According to General Charles Brown, the United States Air Force intends to dispose of the F-22 Raptor, reducing its fleet from seven fighter aircraft models to just four.
A study is underway to define the best combination of aircraft between the old and the new generation.
According to Brown, “the F-22 will be replaced by the fighter of the next generation air dominance program [NGAD], which will fly alongside the F-35. The F-15EX and F-16 then in operation ".
The USAF has 182 F-22 fighters and the average age of the fleet is 12 years.
The F-22 is the main element of air defense in the United States, but despite this, it has a number of deficiencies and operational problems, according to David S. Nahom, Lieutenant General of the USAF. "The crews that fly and the teams that maintain and repair it [the F-22] are simply incredible people, as it is an extremely difficult aircraft to maintain and move," he said.
The USAF had plans to build its fleet with 750 fighter units, but as its expectations were dashed, that number was set at 187.
