The International Airlines Group (IAG), owner of British Airways, expects that starting in July, the company's travel will start to recover, as there is a forecast of a 25% increase in its capacity in this second quarter of 2021. In addition, IAG's loss was less than previously forecast by analysts.

The company declined to make a forecast of how many flights it will take in the second half of this year, but said the recovery is already underway. After the loss of US $ 1.4 billion in the first quarter was disclosed, Luis Gallego, IAG's executive president, said: "we consider in the second half that we are going to fly and we are prepared for that". The company also did not disclose its profit outlook for this year.

Gallego had previously stated that for this recovery to be possible, government action, such as opening travel between countries with high vaccination rates, would also be essential.

Despite the 25% increase in the company's capacity, it is still behind other companies and this number does not represent a significant increase when compared to the company's activity in the first quarter.

"Part of the reason we are not providing guidance [for third quarter capacity] is simply because we still don't know what's on the green list," said Steve Gunning, the company's chief financial officer. The “green list” is a list of destinations with low risk, where it is possible to travel without having to quarantine when returning.

According to analyst Mark Simpson, "the company presented a solid set of results and is aiming for the beginning of the recovery in the summer".

Other airlines are also forecasting greater flight capacity as of July. Air France-KLM foresees for the second quarter an operation of 50% of its capacity in relation to the beginning of the pandemic, presenting an increase to 55 to 65% in the third quarter. Lufthansa expects to operate at 40% of its pre-pandemic capacity throughout the year 2021.
