In recent days, several countries have voiced harsh criticism of Belarus's action on the Ryanair flight, which was diverted and had a journalist who opposed the arrested government. See the external link below for the article where we talked about these criticisms.

The UN civil aviation agency announced on Thursday (27) that it will begin an investigation into the diversion of the plane. "The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has decided to conduct an investigation to find the facts about this event," the agency said in a statement.

“The body stresses the importance of establishing the facts of what happened, and of understanding whether there has been any violation of international aviation law by any ICAO member state”, as it says in its own words.

The parents of the 26-year-old journalist Roman Protasevich on Thursday called for international help to free him, and the global powers of the G7 also demanded his release. The European Union's foreign policy chief threatened to impose economic sanctions on President Alexander Lukashenko, who caused a great deal of outrage by sending the MiG-29 fighter to intercept the Ryanair flight.

ICAO, of which Belarus is a member, has no power to order sanctions. However, several airlines have been advised to avoid the country's airspace.

Russia's support for Minsk signals that the Security Council is very unlikely to reach an agreement on a joint statement.
