Terminal 3 at London Airport is now intended for passengers arriving from countries included in the “red list”, ie places with a high risk of Covid-19. To avoid contact with other passengers, the traffic of “at risk” travelers will be carried out exclusively in this terminal. Upon arrival, these passengers will also be taken to a hotel, where they will have to fulfill an eleven-night quarantine before being able to move around the country.
It is expected that the separation of a specific terminal for passengers “at risk” will facilitate the work of the Border Force in its role in dealing with these travelers. In addition, this measure will also increase safety for other passengers, who will have a lower risk of exposure to new variants.
“These practices are likely to be a feature of UK travel in the near future, as countries vaccinate their populations at different rates. We are adapting Heathrow to this reality by initially opening a dedicated arrivals facility,” said a Heathrow airport spokesperson.
The trade unions of aviation industry professionals supported the measure, as they had previously stated that by mixing passengers from red list locations with others, employees and travelers were being exposed to a great risk, all the more so because this it also caused an agglomeration of people in the airport's immigration areas.
Terminal 3 had been closed in April 2020, due to the crisis caused by the pandemic and the consequent drop in demand for flights. This reopening is the first time the terminal has been used since then.
The “red list” is currently made up of 43 countries, including Brazil, but some of these countries are allowed to make direct flights to the UK. Among these, India, Kenya, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Philippines are those that can fly directly.
