The UK updated the ranking of destinations for international travel on Thursday 3 June. Portugal was downgraded, being that it was in green, changing to amber, classification a little less secure. The classifications are intended to safeguard public health against worrying variants and protect the vaccine's release.

The list included seven more countries in the red color, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Costa Rica, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Trinidad and Tobago, however, the changes will only take effect at 4 am on June 8th.

In the case of Portugal, as the country has become part of the amber list, it will be mandatory for travelers from there to be quarantined. This change was implemented because of concerns about the spread of new virus variants in the UK.

Furthermore, Portugal's situation calls for swift action, as covid-19's positive tests have been doubled since the first revision of the corres update. Portugal's positivity rates have been higher than those recommended by the WHO.

Another worrying reason is that Portugal has already registered 68 cases of the Delta variant, bringing health concerns associated with new viral strains. The variant is being studied to see if the available vaccines are less effective in fighting it and if it causes worse symptoms or not.

Anyway, this information is also worrying for other countries in the world, especially for Brazil, since trips between Brazil and Portugal are quite frequent.

As for the red list countries, such as Brazil and all the others in South America, the transmission of the disease is classified as high and with variants of concern.

In addition, flights arriving from countries that are on the red list will have to stay in a dedicated terminal, so that they can be quarantined away from the others, ensuring the health and safety of the country's residents.
