Airbus, which recently unveiled its updated production plan – in which it intends to increase the manufacturing of almost all aircraft families by 2025 – has received criticism from the director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Willie Walsh, who considered the “overly optimistic” plan. The manufacturer hopes to start producing by then more than 70 units of the A320 family per month.
Walsh said in an interview with Reuters that he questions whether there really is a need to expand production so much at a time of such low demand across the industry. "Let's wait and see because there's obviously a big discrepancy between what manufacturers say they're going to produce and what airlines decide to buy," he said. In another interview, Walsh also commented on Airbus' plan: "So you know they're in the sales business. I don't see there will be a requirement for everything they're producing." Walsh was formerly president of British Airways and has therefore played the role of aircraft buyer.
Guillaume Faury, Airbus CEO, said in response that he believes there is a large stagnant demand for short-range planes, arguing in favor of the manufacturer's plan. Airbus did not reach the delivery target in 2019, falling short of expectations due to problems in production and supply chains. Therefore, in order to meet the repressed demand since then, the company is betting on expanding production.
