The 15-kilogram phosphorus bomb was found during construction work on the military annex in Melsbroek, attached to the international airport, but it does not pose a risk to residents of the region.
The presence of the artifact was a surprise to everyone, so the Explosives Removal and Destruction Service (SEDEE) was called in and needed to intervene and remove the bomb from the site around 15:30. Landings and take-offs were closed until 8 pm on the affected runways and traffic was concentrated on runway 07. Even with the closing of runways, the airport was not affected by traffic, as demand is low.
