Mike Gascoyne, Vertical Aerospace's CTO (Chief technology officer) and former Formula One engineer for well-known teams including McLaren, Sauber, Jordan, Tyrell and Renault, wants to change urban mobility (UAM) with one of the most sophisticated eVTOL aircraft in the world. world, the VA-X4.

The aircraft has four tilt rotors at the front and two retractable rotors at the rear. This should be enough to travel at over 350 km/h silently, with zero emissions and a low cost per passenger per km.

The aircraft must still be certified to the same standards as large planes, which will make it up to 100x safer than a helicopter.

Vertical was founded in 2016 by British businessman Stephen Fitzpatrick, who is also founder of Egg Energy, the second largest clean energy company in the UK, with 6.5 billion in sales.

The point of the project is to allow regional urban mobility in journeys of up to 160 km, greatly reducing the time spent on commuting.

The same technology standards applied in F1 were applied in eVTOL.

“F1 invested a lot of money in solving technical problems that are very relevant in every other area, but they managed to invest a lot more money than commercial organizations could make,” says Gascoyne.
