As vaccination progresses, aviation returns to its normal levels. This increase in demand is causing Lufthansa to respond with measures that are not seen every day: the large Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A350 are being put in place to meet the high demand.

To meet the demand for summer vacations, the aircraft will be used to cover routes previously operated by smaller aircraft.

The Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet is the largest aircraft that Lufthansa currently operates, as its Airbus A380s are idle and the future uncertain. The 747-8 offers 364 seats. For the sake of comparison, this plane will fly on a route that is typically offered on a 215-seat plane.

These changes are temporary, just until the summer vacation period in Europe is over, but they also show that European demand is returning to pre-pandemic levels as borders are reopened and lockdown measures are relaxed. However, measures need to be relaxed with caution as the delta variant of the coronavirus is spreading and is now predominant in the UK.
