Italy intends to make a billion-dollar investment to launch a new airline, ITA (Italia Transporto Aereo), a replacement for Alitália.
A deal that injects 3 billion euros into the company is close to being closed by the Italian government, contrary to European regulations on the matter.

The Dutch company Ryanair considers the maneuver unfair and will appeal to the European Commission.
"We're waiting to see it, but it's clear it's illegal aid and we're going to defend our interests by appealing this umpteenth loan," said Eddie Wilson, an executive at Ryanair.
“I have the impression that there is nothing new, the ITA will be just the extension of Alitalia, with the same problems that have been seen for decades. The same waste of public resources in an airline that today, as yesterday, will lose money”, added Wilson.
Alitalia has been liquidated and recreated a few times in recent years. Due to financial crises, investments were not enough to reverse the situation and the inefficient business model.
Ryanair is asking the European Union to bid for slots at airports operated by Alitalia. The Dutch was interested in acquiring the slots.
