Japan is making efforts to create a more relevant market for passenger aircraft. Thus, JAXA, Japan's space agency, this week announced an agreement with large Japanese companies to develop a supersonic aircraft for passenger transport, capable of significantly reducing the time of long journeys.
Among the companies that signed the agreement are IHI, Subaru, Kawasaki and Mitsubishi.
The goal is to develop an aircraft capable of flying at Mach 1.6 and carrying up to 50 passengers.
According to a conceptual illustration of the aircraft, published by JAXA, there will be two engines installed in the T-tail. The plane will be 48 meters long, 24 meters wide and weigh 70 tons. In addition, the aircraft will be able to fly approximately 6,500km non-stop. The jet's name has yet to be released.
For some years now, Japan has been studying the effects of supersonic flight, and is looking for a solution to reduce the supersonic boom, which is one of the main obstacles for flights faster than sound.
The supersonic commercial aircraft market is promising and may be in great demand worldwide provided, of course, it is possible to somehow create a technology that is commercially viable, since the feasibility has already been demonstrated for more than 50 years by the superb Concorde.
If the projects materialize, Japan itself would have the potential for a considerable domestic market.
JAXA expects to enter the market in early 2030.
