The electronic components needed to manufacture many products around the world are in short supply. Aircraft equipment is no different. For this reason, there has been a sharp increase in the price of long-range anti-ship missiles LRASM and the air-to-surface missile JASSM, both of which are American-made. The missiles would be equipped on Japanese F-15 fighters.

The initial cost to equip the missiles was 2.2 billion dollars. If you choose not to actually equip the fighters with the weaponry, the Japanese government will save a considerable amount.

This decision is added to the country's fiscal spending reduction measure for 2021, as cost reductions in negotiations with the US were considered a priority.

Currently, Japan intends to modernize 70 of the 200 F-15 fighters of the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force, but that number could be reduced as well.
