Korean Air is committed to reducing the exposure of its tribulations to cosmic radiation. The company's initiative was taken after it found that its crews have an incidence of leukemia and health problems above the average of other human groups.
The company and the air transport workers unions would have had meetings about the matter. After the meetings, the company would have endeavored to take measures to prevent excessive exposure to cosmic radiation from its tribulations by making flight schedules more flexible in order to obtain an acceptable exposure.
BUT WHAT IS COSMIC RADIATION?
Cosmic radiation is one of several forms of radiant energy in the universe. Cosmic radiation originates from the Sun or from distant stars such as radiation circulating in the universe resulting from the ancient explosion of supernova stars.
Passengers and especially crew members are affected by this radiation and the exposure varies depending on the latitude and altitude of the flights and their duration.
The consequences of exposure to cosmic radiation can be quite harmful to the workers' health. The main concern is with the incidence of malignant diseases, mainly leukemia, in these workers. They have an incidence of these diseases considerably higher than other reference groups.
Data regarding these indices and that would have derailed the carrier's initiative are contained in the "Cancer Incidence Among Air Transportation Industry Workers Using the National Cohort Study of Korea" by Wanhyung Lee, Mo-Yeol Kang, and Jin-Ha Yong, August 2019 .
