In an article recently published by Kris Osborn, a former Pentagon official and columnist for The National Interest magazine, he says the United States has been concerned about the possibility of Russia and China developing artificial intelligence to operate drones and weapons systems.
According to the article, Michael Groen, a lieutenant general in the US Marine Corps, believes that the country will not be able to respond in kind if Russia develops “military artificial intelligence”.
Weapons based on artificial intelligence will not be concerned with ethical or humanitarian criteria to carry out an attack, as explained by Osborn. Groen states that "this could put US forces at a disadvantage in a scenario that requires making decisions about the use of lethal force, since a human being must always be informed, which is a provision stipulated in Pentagon doctrine" .
Groen believes that there are ways to use effective weapons based on artificial intelligence and in line with ethical standards. As such, the US Department of Defense is considering developing an artificial intelligence system that uses non-lethal weaponry against non-human targets such as missiles, rockets and drones. For the lieutenant-general, such a measure may help to establish ethical principles in the use of weapons based on artificial intelligence.
