Cuba recorded relatively few cases and kept the spread of Sars-CoV-2 (the virus that causes covid) at acceptable levels. However, earlier this week, the island reported an increase in the level of contagion, being the highest in Latin America. This scenario put pressure on the country's health system, which contributed to initiating protests against the government.

Just last Friday there were more than 7000 positive cases for the disease, being the day with the most infections by the virus since the beginning of the pandemic.

It is in this scenario that Russia sent two giants of the Antovov An-24 cargo loaded with 88 tons of items to help fight the disease, including more than 1 million medical masks, personal protective equipment, food, among others.

The aircraft took off from the Shkalovski airfield (Russia) on July 24th, arriving at José Martí International Airport (Cuba) only on July 26th with help. One of the planes belongs to the Russian Federation Air Force.

The aid was ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, just days after the US imposed sanctions against the Cuban government.
