Azul made an announcement this Monday (02/08) of an agreement with the German company Lilium for the acquisition of 220 eVTOL aircraft, with a total value of up to 1 billion dollars. The agreement provides for the creation of an exclusive network in Brazil with the company's eVTOL. The operation forecast is for 2025.
Azul's idea is to expand connectivity in Brazil in an innovative way, 100% electric and with zero carbon emissions. Azul will operate the aircraft, while the German company will supply spare parts and the monitoring platform.

“Azul has the most exclusive and sustainable business model in Brazil. Our brand presence, our unique connectivity network and our robust loyalty program provide us with the tools to create markets and demand for the Lilium jet operation in Brazil. Just as we have done in the Brazilian domestic market over the past 13 years, we hope again, now with Lilium jets, to create a totally innovative market in the coming years”, says John Rodgerson, CEO of Azul.
Other companies have already made investments in eVTOLs, as well as the Brazilian manufacturer, Embraer. This generated criticism of Azul, as they did not choose the Brazilian project.

However, vehicles have different proposals. Embraer's eVTOL is more for large urban centers, since it is smaller, slower and has less autonomy, while the German one has capacity for more passengers, is faster and has greater autonomy. Thus, Embraer's eVTOL can be more advantageous and more economical on shorter routes. One acquisition does not cancel the other.
