An aeronautical source told the Russian agency TASS on Aug. 2 that the long-range bomber will have "the demonstration model ready in 2023". However, TASS has no official confirmation of this information.
The source also claims that a new weapons system is being developed with the plane. It is a kind of hypersonic weapon. The plane, however, will be subsonic. The preliminary design of the bomber was approved in 2019, with Tupolev PJSC already starting to develop the documentation.

The device is made according to the flying wing scheme, with technologies and materials that reduce visibility to radar, making it stealth. The plane will be capable of carrying up to 40 tons of cruise missiles, high-precision bombs and hypersonic weapons in total. The aircraft can still carry nuclear weapons. In addition, the plane will be equipped with strong communication and electronic warfare systems.
By 2020, sources said production of the prototype had already started. PAK DA should complement or replace current Russian bombers: Tupolev Tu 22-3M, Tu-95 and Tu-160 of the Russian Air Force.
“Previous generation strategic bombers like the Tu-160 were created to break through the enemy's air defense system. Thanks to their supersonic speed and flight characteristics, they can climb into the stratosphere and thus avoid fighter jets and drop bombs over enemy territory. The new-generation PAK DA aircraft will be able to fire nuclear missiles without leaving Russia's airspace,” says Vadim Koziúlin, professor at the Russian Academy of Military Sciences.
