Raytheon has been awarded a modification and modernization contract for AMRAAM missiles for Production Lot 35. Weapons modernization involves redesigning the missile and Telemetry Systems.

In this way, the effects of missile obsolescence will be resolved throughout the 2020s, through the replacement of electronic chips and other components that the original manufacturers can no longer produce.

The US$482.9 million contract also includes the production of Lot 32 of AMRAAM and involves sales to foreign customers such as Japan, Kuwait, Poland, Indonesia, Qatar, Germany, Australia and the United Kingdom, representing 28% of the contract value. Each batch represents from 400 to 500 missiles.

Modernization work is expected to be done in Tucson, Arizona. Completion is scheduled for May 31, 2024.

The AMRAAM is an active radar intercept air-to-air missile with electronic protection capabilities against mass penetration aircraft. The missile has been in service since 1991 and was designed to replace the also air-to-air missile guided by AIM-7 Sparrow radar.
