South Korean company Korean Air announced the retirement of its Airbus 380-800s in the next five years and its Boeing 747-8s in the next ten years.
Cho Won-tae, CEO of Korean Air, said in an interview with Flight Global that sixteen aircraft will be phased out of the fleet, including the six units of Asiana Airlines, which is currently being merged with the company.
In place of the four-engine, twenty 787-10 and ten 787-9, ordered from Boeing in 2019, will enter.
The reason for the replacement is the pursuit of improved efficiency, as the 787 family has up to 25% greater fuel efficiency compared to previous generations, as well as providing a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide.
In addition, Won-tae also claimed to trust the 737 MAX, despite criticizing the way the manufacturer dealt with the problems faced by the model over the past two years. In 2015, the company ordered 30 units of the aircraft, but deliveries will only begin in the coming weeks due to safety concerns.
