Images of the C-17 Globemaster III that took off from Kabul with thousands of people on the airstrip and, with people hanging from the landing covers circulating all over the internet, news broke that a routine inspection of the plane after landing in Al Ueid, Qatar found human remains in the landing gear bay.
The incident took place on August 16, at Hamid Karzai airport in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan. The US aircraft would deliver support equipment and evacuate US civilians from the country. During the mission, hundreds of Afghans surrounded the plane, wanting to escape the extreme situation, and the plane took off anyway.
“Faced with a rapidly deteriorating security situation around the aircraft, the C-17 crew decided to leave the airport as soon as possible,” the Air Force said in a statement.
"The aircraft is seized for human material collection and inspection before returning to flight status."
The US Air Force's Office of Special Investigations is investigating what happened so that similar situations don't happen again.
