After a technical failure, a helicopter carrying 16 people – three crew and thirteen tourists – crashed into Lake Kurile, in Kamchatka, in the far east of Russia. According to Interfax news agency, seven people are missing.
The Regional Ministry of Health informed Interfax that nine passengers were found alive in the Kronotsky Nature Reserve. The survivors were treated by two medical teams specializing in disaster medicine, who traveled to the scene of the accident.
According to the Kronotsky Nature Reserve administration, the helicopter sank and the wreckage is still at the bottom of the lake: "After the accident, the helicopter sank completely. The survivors, nine people, managed to get out and reach the surface, from where they were rescued by reserve personnel”.
There will be a search operation to find the seven missing and divers are expected to arrive at the site.
During the flight, the crew discovered a technical failure in the helicopter and tried to make an emergency landing in dense fog, but the operation failed and the aircraft ended up crashing into the lake.
