Italy reached an agreement with the European Commission to decide on the future of the state-owned company Alitaia. As soon as Alitalia ends its operations on October 14th, the new airline Italia Transporto Aereo (ITA) will begin flying on October 15th.
The focus of the discussions was to keep the new ITA independent of Alitalia, thus preventing ITA from being responsible for paying the billions of euros that Alitalia received as state aid when it was in need.
In the negotiations, it was also defined that ITA will not inherit all Alitalia slots, but only a part, corresponding to 85% of the old company at Milan Airport and 43% at Rome-Fiumicino International Airport.
A statement from ITA said the company will aim to raise start-up capital of around $826 million to buy Alitalia assets and begin operations.
Initially, ITA will operate a total of 52 aircraft. 7 of them are widebody type to be used on longer routes. The aircraft will operate in 45 destinations with 61 routes. In 2025, there will be 105 aircraft, 74 destinations and 89 routes.
The old Alitalia had 11,000 employees, so the new ITA will employ between 2750 and 2950 of them initially, with this number going to be 5550 to 5750 in 2025.
