Last Wednesday, August 25, a video posted on social media shows an American UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter being taxied at Kandahar Airport in Afghanistan. It is speculated that the aircraft was operated by the Taliban, but this fact is not confirmed by the video, which also does not show the aircraft taking off.
Furthermore, experts say it is not known whether there is anyone among the Islamists who would have the knowledge to operate this equipment.
Joseph Dempsey, a military analyst at the International Institute for Strategic Studies and an associate defense researcher, posted on Twitter: “The Taliban allegedly captured an Afghan Air Force UH-60 Black Hawk in Kandahar. It is important to note that he is only shown taxiing, not flying”.
Last week, Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Adviser, had already said that much of the US weaponry "fell into the hands of the Taliban".
“Obviously, we don't have a complete picture of where all the defense materials went. But certainly a good part of it fell into the hands of the Taliban,” said Sullivan.
Since 2001, the United States has spent $83 billion (BRL 436 billion) on training and equipment for the Afghan Army, including UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and Humvee vehicles. Last month, seven helicopters arrived in Afghanistan. There are now fears that some of them could fall into Taliban hands.
