Last Sunday, August 29, an incident with a Cargojet Airways Boeing 767 freighter closed the runway at Narita Airport in Japan.

During takeoff, the aircraft ended up hitting its tail, dragging it against the runway, the so-called tail-strike. This type of incident occurs when there is too much tilt of the aircraft nose during takeoff or landing.

In this incident, excessive nose tilt occurred during takeoff, when the aircraft entered a steep angle of climb too early, causing the tail to collide with the runway.

The incident was recorded on video (link below). In the images, first you notice the smoke coming out of the tail of the aircraft right after the collision and, a little later, with the plane closer to the camera, there is also a mark on the underside of the tail, indicating the incident.

The aircraft, however, continued its flight normally and landed at its original destination, Vancouver. The runway at Narita Airport was damaged by a centerline light and had to be closed for an hour, causing six flights to be delayed.

The tail-strike caused damage to the aircraft 31 cm long and 15 cm wide and up to 2 cm deep in the tail, according to the AviationSafetyNetwork portal.
