Europe is experiencing a rebound in aviation, with this summer being the first season of solid growth. However, the numbers seen in the pre-pandemic period seem to be far away.
Although the number of passengers transported was 50% lower this summer when compared to 2019, the Lufthansa Group's cash flow closed positive, and the Group's CEO, Carsten Spohr, said at an event in Frankfurt (Germany) that the pandemic is entering the final phase.
In the interview on the 30th, Spohr recalled a prediction about the pandemic that seems to be the most correct: the aviation sector would be the first to enter the crisis and the last to leave.
If all continues well this year, the company should have back at least 40% of the indicators it had before the pandemic. The company's cargo operations are on the rise, so the CEO expects a $1.1 billion profit from the segment this year.
Winter, however, is not going to be the easiest, with Spohr expressing concern about that. “We are preparing for another long, cold winter for us as an airline, driven, of course, by the fourth wave”
Another aggravating factor will be the fact that the European Union will take the US off the list of safe places to travel.
the CEO also spoke about modernizing European airspace in order to make it more efficient, in a project called Single European Sky. He also said that he defends the modernization of the fleets of airlines around the world, so that the reduction of carbon emissions is achieved.
