The route that connects the airports of the capital Recife (PE) to the island Fernando de Noronha (PE) operated by Gol is the first carbon neutral route in Brazil. The route offset 100% of emissions by the company itself. The project in partnership with Moss, a carbon credit offset platform, entitled “My Flight Compensates” had the first flight performed by a Boeing 737-700.
The offset was paid for by Gol, so that passengers could also choose to offset emissions voluntarily, by paying a separate fee. ““From now on, we will neutralize 1/4 of the island's total emissions with our partner moss.earth. And, like this, we are going to take care of our Planet together more and more”, said Gol in a statement.
Inside, the flight remains the same as all the others, with the difference that the water is served in aluminum cans. The route takes less than an hour and emits 50 kilograms of CO2 per passenger.
To neutralize the carbon emitted by the operation, Moss, funded by Gol, guarantees the removal of CO2 through projects for the conservation of forests, biomass and clean energy. In this way, the money is used in projects that work for the conservation and reforestation of the Amazon Forest.
Gol announced that it will neutralize carbon dioxide emissions by 2021 and, for that purpose, it uses not only carbon credits, but research into more efficient operations and biofuels, as well as the use of more ecologically correct aircraft.
The island of Fernando de Noronha will be carbon-free, so by August 2022, cars running on ethanol, diesel and gasoline will be banned from entering the island. After 2030, all cars with combustion engines will be removed from the island, which will allow only electric cars.
“The biggest favored by the initiative is the island itself. While we do not operate with sustainable fuels, automatic CO2 compensation in flown sections is a great ally to minimize environmental impacts”, says Pedro Scorza, pilot of the inaugural flight and advisor for environmental projects.
