Last Thursday, September 2, the Pakistani Navy launched the Sea Sultan, its first modern maritime patrol aircraft (MPA). The aircraft is a variation of an Embraer Lineage 1000 executive jet and will feature weapons and sensors produced by the manufacturer Leonardo.
The aircraft will have a similar use to the US P-8i Neptune, which is based on the Boeing 737-800 and which is currently in operation in India.
Also on Thursday, the inauguration ceremony took place in Karachi, Pakistan. During the event, Amjad Khan Niazi, chief of the Naval General Staff, stated that the new aircraft will increase the maritime situational awareness of the Pakistani Navy.
The Pakistan Navy has also contracted two other Embraer Lineage 1000 series aircraft, which will be equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors and will be used to carry out maritime air operations, such as anti-ship and anti-submarine combat. Pakistan has contracted manufacturer Leonardo to carry out the transformation of the three Embraer jets into Sea Sultan long-range maritime patrol aircraft. With an additional contract, there will also be the integration of the aircraft into an anti-submarine warfare and maritime patrol package.
In an earlier welcome speech, Rear Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Commander of the Pakistan Fleet, Reinforcing the Sea Sultan's capabilities, commented that he also hopes the new aircraft will enhance the capabilities of the Pakistani Navy and help protect the Pakistani Navy. the country's maritime interests.
There are also other contracts with Leonardo that will total ten Sea Sultans in the Pakistan fleet. The aircraft will replace the P-3C Orion fleet.
Parallel to the Pakistani project, Brazil also has a maritime patrol aircraft development project through the conversion of Embraer Lineage 1000 aircraft, in order to replace the P-3B Orion fleet.
