During the Army-2021 Forum, at the end of August, two contracts were signed between the MiG Corporation and the Russian Ministry of Defense, after the latter asked the company to update its MiG-31 fighter fleet.

One of the contracts is related to the upgrade of the MiG-31 to the MiG-31BM version, and the other is related to the upgrade of MiG-31K fighter-interceptors, capable of carrying Kinzhal hypersonic missiles.

This new version will have an efficiency 2.6 times greater than the basic version of the MiG-31. The maximum detection range for air targets has been increased by 320 km in the new version. The automatic tracking capability was also increased to 24 targets, being able to simultaneously engage up to eight, while the basic version could automatically track ten targets.

In addition, the Argon-K embedded computer will be replaced by the new Baget 55-06, which is capable of selecting four higher priority targets, simultaneously engaged by long-range air-to-air missiles.

A new long-range missile with Mach 6 speed and a range of up to 400 km will also be developed especially for the MiG-31BM.

The new version of the fighter will also have anti-radar, air-ship and air-to-ground missiles, thus being multi-purpose. It will also be equipped with a refueling probe and will have some avionics unified with the MiG-29SMT.
