Guarulhos International Airport will have a new, faster and more modern means of transport to access the terminal: the Automated People Mover (APM), a type of fully automated rail vehicle. The new vehicle will connect the airport's passenger terminals to the Line 13 - Jade station, of the Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM).
The contract for the construction of the modal was signed last Wednesday, September 8, by the Ministry of Infrastructure and the concessionaire GRU Airport, the terminal's administrator.
The works are scheduled to start in January 2022 and will last for 24 months.
Marcelo Sampaio, executive secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure, said: “São Paulo and the whole of greater São Paulo have a volume of demand for infrastructure, especially for means of transport. It is noteworthy that you need to have state-of-the-art equipment here. And that is what we are bringing today to the largest airport in the country, to the largest airport in South America. We are bringing state-of-the-art equipment that effectively represents what Guarulhos is for Brazil and for the world."
The action is part of the September Railroad, a season of federal actions to encourage rail transport in the country.
The investment planned for carrying out the project is R$271.7 million.
In total, it will be 2,371 meters long, with three vehicles capable of transporting 200 people each. In addition, the vehicles will have air conditioning and Wi-Fi, as well as spaces to accommodate luggage and an information panel connected to the airport. In Guarulhos, they will have stations in the three terminals of the airport next to CPTM.
Currently, the connection between the Guarulhos Terminal and the CPTM Line 13 – Jade Airport Station is made by buses offered by GRU Airport. The trip can take up to 10 minutes, with some discomfort, such as the possibility of taking full buses and having to carry bags. With the new vehicle, the total travel and waiting time is expected to be 6 minutes, and only one transfer will be needed. In addition, passengers will be dropped off at the door of each of the terminals.
Marcelo Sampaio states that “People Mover, monorail, integration of the airport with the subway, whatever the name the population will give, without a doubt it is imperative to the need for mobility, to connect this airport with the local society, especially here in the state of São Paulo”.
People Mover will use aeromobile technology, already implemented in international airports. It is a system with low energy consumption and low construction cost, as it uses light structures. It features pneumatically powered steel wheels and rails located outside the vehicles.
In addition, the vehicle also does not emit pollutants. “We are going to stop emitting CO2, we are going to be replacing it with clean technology, an increasingly cleaner energy matrix”, says Sampaio.
