Indonesia has announced the purchase of C-130J Super Hercules aircraft from Lockheed Martin and, although it has not disclosed the quantity, it is believed that around five aircraft will be acquired.

The negotiation will be through a direct commercial sale contract between the country's government and the manufacturer. Indonesia has shown interest in upgrading its military means, for example, with the purchase of T-50 aircraft from KAI, a South Korean company.

In a statement, the manufacturer stated that “Lockheed Martin is honored to welcome Indonesia to the worldwide family of the C-130J Super Hercules”. The choice for the C-130J was already expected, as Indonesia already has experience in operating the aircraft, in addition to the good relationship that the country has had with Washington recently. The sale to Indonesia could be an opportunity for Embraer with the C-390 Millenium, but the Brazilian aircraft ended up being passed over due to the aforementioned reasons.

Currently, Indonesia has 24 units of the C-130 Hercules. The average age of the fleet is 47 years, but the six C-130Bs already have more than 60 years of service.

The Indonesian fleet also has a significant number of Russian fighters, such as its five Sukhoi Su-37s and its eleven Su-30s, in addition to some Embraer A-29 Super Tucanos.
