United Kingdom, which concerns the testing of the next phase of the Tempest program (Flight Test Aircraft – FTA). The contract provides for converting a Boeing 757-200 into a laboratory for testing the sensors and communication systems that will be present in the new Tempest fighter (FCAS – Future Combat Air System).
The last stages of development of the complex systems that will be in the fighter will have to be tested in the Boeing 757 called Excalibur, in allusion to the legendary sword of King Arthur, as it will offer a real world environment for the sensors. In addition, the aircraft will be available to the entire Team Tempest to complement the development of unmanned technologies in other flight tests.
This contract concerns the testing and design phase of the Boeing 757, where the suitability of the aircraft for testing and the virtual modeling of the design for that purpose is assessed, which included significant changes in the nose section in order to incorporate the necessary sensors and equipment. and to test aerodynamic and structural impact. The two-year contract covers the entire preparation of the plane.
In addition to being the founder of Team Tempest, Leonardo is the leading company in the development of sensors and communication systems. The partnership with 2Excel is longstanding in the testing of military electronics equipment.
