Expanded in February 2021, the ALBATROSS initiative, by the main groups interested in European aviation, led by Airbus, aims to carry out several flight tests to validate technologies that make aircraft more energy efficient.
The program not only covers the characteristics of the flight itself, but encompasses aspects such as airlines, network managers, airports and passengers and covers operational aspects and air traffic management.
The solutions will be put into practice during the demonstration flights. Another focus of the project is the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The Study of the aircraft trajectory also makes it possible to reduce the environmental footprint of flights.
ALBATROSS partners are Air France, Austro Control, DLR, DSNA, Eurocontrol, LFV, Lufthansa, Novair, Schiphol, Smart Airport Systems, SWEDAVIA, SWISS, Thales AVS France and WIZZ AIR UK. The Airbus project is funded by the European Union.
Approximately 1,000 flights will be tested starting in September 2021 with operational solutions to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions with the AlbatrossONE folding-wing aircraft prototype. The folding wings are so that more fuel efficiency tests can be done. The first test results should be seen in 2022.
