After an expected reduction in the order of F-35 fighters, the Italian Defense Department confirmed that it will maintain the purchase of 90 units of the fighter, an amount originally planned.
Currently, the European country has 28 F-35A fighters, ordered in the phase 1 program. For phase 2, there will be 27 aircraft and for phase 2B, there is a third batch planned with 35 aircraft. The country is studying the possibility of a phase 3, which would increase the number of F-35 fighters to 131 units.
Of the 90 units ordered, 30 units of the F-35B model will be destined to replace the old AV-8B Harrier short-take-off and vertical landing aircraft.
