Spanish airlines Volotea, Air Nostrum and Dante Aeronautical have teamed up to develop a 100% electric aircraft, aiming to take another step towards emission-free aviation. This new aircraft, by offering a reduced operating cost compared to larger aircraft, will play an important role in regional zero-emission transport, allowing connections between small population centers.

The consortium expects the initial prototype to be certified for flight in 2024, representing an important milestone for the aviation industry.

The collaboration also involves artificial intelligence companies such as DataBeaco, engineering and technological innovation companies in the aviation sector, including the Spanish multinational CT, as well as public research organizations such as CIDAUT (in Portuguese, Foundation for Transport and Research and Energy Development) and CIDETEC (in Portuguese, Specialized Center for Research in Energy Storage). The project is a commitment to technological innovation and sustainability.

Carlos Muñoz, CEO and founder of Volotea, stated: “We began our collaboration with Dante Aeronautical in 2019 and are very proud to see how the project has grown and gained momentum with the support of new partners, including several Spanish technology companies. The development of an electric aircraft with hydrogen battery technology will reduce carbon emissions. It makes perfect sense for Volotea to support this project, as it is fully aligned with our goal of connecting underserved cities and doing this in a more sustainable way.”

Carlos Bertomeu, CEO of Air Nostrum, said, “The benefits of Air Nostrum's collaborations with technology start-ups and universities to improve efficiency and passenger services are proven. As a leading regional airline, Air Nostrum clearly has a lot to contribute to this exciting project, especially when it comes to sustainability, which is something we've been working on for many years.”

Dante Aeronautical co-founder Miguel Madinabeitia said: “For Dante Aeronautical, expanding the consortium to include other innovative technology companies can only strengthen our plan to develop a 100% electric aircraft, which will revolutionize current thinking and move us towards cleaner and more sustainable transport. This project also fits in perfectly with our efforts in other parts of the world, such as our initiative in Australia to electrify seaplanes.”
